HBCU Community Walk Series in the Fall

The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance is excited to roll out a 4-part HBCU Community Walk Series, in partnership with community organization, We Walk With Shawn.Each month, for the next 4 months, the MVA encourages you to join in as we explore the historically black colleges & universities of Nashville with campus walks that highlight the history, culture, and health resources in our community.

Dr. Winkfield Awarded Disruptive Innovator

Join us in celebrating our Executive Director, Dr. Karen Winkfield, as she was recently named the 2024 winner of the Healio Disruptive Innovators Award! This annual event celebrates risk takers, ground breakers & status quo pushers. She was highlighted for:•  identifying & addressing social determinants of health to improve patient care•  challenging peers to meet patients where they are•  lifting underserved communities through initiatives designed around the peopleWe are proud to be led by this Disruptive Innovator!

High Regards for the IPE Program

Last month, program manager, Mercedes Ridinger attended the Tennessee Interprofessional Practice and Education Consortium (TIPEC) at Lipscomb University. This was an excellent opportunity to showcase the collaborative work amongst our students, faculty, and community partners.Earlier this year, the MVA celebrated a decade of impact through its involvement with the IPE program. 

Taking Nashville to New York at NMA

The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance was thrilled to be in attendance at the National Medical Association's Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly. MVA staff members were in New York City, and attendees got a glimpse of Nashville, with Music City inspired giveaways alongside conversations about ongoing health equity work in Nashville.

Dynamic Duo Transforms Community Engagement at the MVA

Nicolette Thayer, our new Program Manager for Community Engagement, is a champion of building meaningful connections.  Her MBA and MS degrees, with specializations in digital marketing, operations, and sales development, particularly within the sectors of higher education and healthcare technology, have honed her ability to skillfully navigate and connect diverse stakeholder groups.

Black Maternal Health Takes Center Stage at Meharry Medical College

Content provided by Dr. Rolanda Lister and 2024 Impact StatementThis April, during Black Maternal Health Month, Dr. Rolanda Lister, Asst. Professor, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and her partners, launched "Celebrating Black Motherhood," an event that sought to transform the conversation around Black maternal experiences. Sadly, Black women face a 2-4 times higher risk of pregnancy-related death compared to their white counterparts. Understandably, this creates a climate of fear and anxiety for many expectant Black mothers.

Interactive Networking Café Brews Up Collaboration for Health Equity in Nashville

On Monday, April 22nd, 2024, the Tennessee State Museum buzzed with energetic optimism as community health advocates, researchers, and healthcare professionals gathered for the Spring 2024 Equity and Engagement Café. Hosted by the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, the event aimed to spark conversation and collaboration around community-engaged research and its role in achieving health equity.
