The MVA is proud to partner with the More Than A Walk Foundation, to bring a 4-part HBCU Community Walk series to the greater Nashville community. The walks are free and open to all, meant to explore the historically black colleges & universities of Nashville through campus walks that highlight the history, culture, and health resources.
On September 18th, the MVA team, alongside Shawn Dromgoole of More Than A Walk, led a group of community members through a 2-mile tour across the Meharry Medical College and part of the Jefferson Street corridor.
Highlights of the tour included: the site of the family home of Zephaniah Alexander Looby, the Jefferson Street Gateway to Heritage, the Meharry School of Dentistry, and the S.S. Kresge Learning Resources Center (LRC).
At the LRC, the group was able to hear from the woman that literally wrote the book on Meharry's history. Library Executive Director, and author to Meharry Medical College (Campus History), Sandra Martin Parham, led a conversation on the remarkable history of the college, showing a brief video, and displaying a beautifully created floor-to-ceiling timeline. The Meharry library team graciously put together complimentary bags with Meharry giveaways included.
The walk ended in the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance with continued conversations over a shared meal from local barbecue restaurant, Ooh Wee BBQ.
