Equity & Engagement Cafe Innovation Speaker, Rebecca Selove, PhD

Community-engaged research stands out among Dr. Selove’s practices for its inclusive approach to solving health-related issues. This approach emphasizes the importance of involving community members in the research process, ensuring that studies are not only about the community but also by and for the community. Community-engaged research has produced more relevant and sustainable outcomes, as it leverages the unique insights and lived experiences of community members. Dr. Selove’s commitment to community is evident in her ongoing projects, which aim to bridge the gap between academic research and every-day-life application, thereby making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by health disparities.

Moreover, Dr. Selove’s dedication to mentoring the next generation of researchers and practitioners underscores the importance of building capacity within academic and local communities to continue this vital work. In 2013, she began her current position at Tennessee State University as a Research Associate Professor in the Center for Prevention Research, participating in studies to address cancer disparities. She became the Center Director in 2021.

By encouraging and guiding both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, in their endeavors to address cancer health disparities, Dr. Selove fosters a culture of inclusivity and innovation. Through her leadership, Dr. Selove demonstrates that community-engaged research is not just about conducting studies; it’s about creating a collaborative ecosystem where everyone, from students to community members, plays a crucial role in advancing health equity.
