Career-Defining Program for
Underrepresented Minorities that Emphasizes
Laboratory Research in Neuroscience

Summer apprentices are official members of research teams and have access to outstanding research scientists and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. Research opportunities are diverse and include:
  • Exploring the intricacies of nerve communication and how these go awry in disease states
  • Investigating how the nervous system develops from a single cell to the complex structure of the brain and the influences of the internal and external environment
  • Explaining the addictive properties of drugs
  • Developing and studying genetically modified organisms, from worms to mice, as tools to understand behavior and disease processes
  • Defining genetic variability and its role in brain diseases
  • Understanding the biological basis for neurological and psychiatric diseases

The Summer Neuroscience Apprentice Program for Undergraduates (SNAP), offers minority undergraduates an opportunity to experience the excitement of brain research. Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University recently formed a partnership to help develop and promote the scientific careers of underrepresented minorities. SNAP is the first stage of that process and is linked to opportunities for advanced training in graduate school.

SNAP consists of ten weeks of directed research in a state-of-the-art laboratory, supplemented by mini-courses in the ethics of science and “survival” skills for young aspiring scientists. A variety of enrichment activities include faculty seminars, guest lecturers and a closing celebration with individual presentations of research by students.

SNAP enables the partnering institutions to identify and recruit underrepresented minorities for graduate programs leading to careers in neuroscience research.

Compensation
In addition to a $2500 stipend, the program provides housing and a travel allowance

Meharry Medical College is the largest private, historically black institution exclusively dedicated to educating health care professionals and biomedical scientists in the United States. The journal Black Issues in Higher Education recently ranked Meharry number one in the nation in terms of Ph.D. degrees awarded to African Americans in the biological/life sciences. Less than three miles away is Vanderbilt University, a front-line research institution with a long history of research and training in neuroscience.

Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt School of Medicine recently established a partnership to create a center of excellence for minority training in neuroscience which will serve as a national model for an innovative program that addresses the national need to increase underrepresented minorities in science. Our linked undergraduate-graduate-postgraduate training will ensure increased opportunities for students to move between Meharry and Vanderbilt, thus enhancing training and promoting diversity at both institutions.
